The glorious building that is St Mark's Basilica (Basilica di San Marco) in Venice began modestly in the year 828. Over the following centuries the fantastic interior became completely covered with opulent gold mosaics telling the visual biblical stories with wondrous iridescent effects. The incredible details throughout this architectural masterpiece secured St. Mark’s as a symbol of the Republic of Venice’s wealth and power.
