About California Thyroid Center
Thyroid ablation refers to the destruction or removal of the thyroid gland, typically as a treatment for thyroid cancer or hyperthyroidism. There are several ways to perform thyroid ablation, including surgical removal (thyroidectomy), radioactive iodine treatment, and ethanol ablation. Surgical removal of the thyroid gland is usually reserved for cases of thyroid cancer or large goiters that cannot be managed with other treatments. Radioactive iodine treatment is a common form of thyroid ablation for hyperthyroidism, where the thyroid gland produces too much thyroid hormone. The radioactive iodine is taken up by the thyroid gland, where it destroys the thyroid cells, leading to a reduction in thyroid hormone production. Ethanol ablation involves injecting ethanol (alcohol) directly into a thyroid nodule to destroy the abnormal tissue.
